How to transition your cat’s litter tray to HERDD

Cats are creatures of habit, changing litter needs to be done gradually. The good news is, HERDD pet litter is one of the most nature-like choices you can make when it comes to filling your cat’s litter tray, so the transition when done right, should go smoothly.

Here’s how to transition your cat’s litter to HERDD pet litter:

Very important: Keep the tray in the same location during the transition & avoid introducing other new things during this ~10 day period.

Days 1 & 2: Sprinkle a cup of HERDD around the edges of the tray, over the old litter.

Days 3 to 5: Tip out the tray, & replenish with a 50/50 mix of old & HERDD.

Days 6 & 7: Tip out the tray, add ~2cm depth of HERDD, and sprinkle 1 cup of old litter over it.

Day 8: Fully transition to HERDD at a depth of ~2cm in the tray {& follow our steps for purrfecting the HERDD tray below}

Day 9 & 10: Watch your cat’s behaviour. Some cats adapt quicker, others need a slower switch.

If you are seeing any signs of rejecting the litter tray, slow the transition down, by adding 2 days into each step above.

Type of litter tray doesn’t matter, but size does:

Type: The type of tray doesn’t matter, & we actually prefer more simple over technical & fancy at HERDD HQ. Simple is more akin to the cat heading into the garden for a toilet stop, then a giant mechanical box.

Size: Our preferred size & style tray is like this tray here; a 40cm x 30cm simple tray which is super affordable & will last a lifetime. It’s purrfect for our normal sized short hair cats.

If you have a messy or big cat {e.g. Maine coon}, size up to >46cm x >36cm with a higher side—we like this one here as it makes it easy for the cat to climb in at one end.

Mat: Place a mat or cardboard under the tray, extending at least 25cm either side of the tray. A piece of fake grass or lightweight nylon {like garage} carpet is great. This captures any litter that makes it’s way out of the box, & is easy to take outside & shake out.

Placement: choose a corner in a quiet space that is always accessible, like the laundry, second bathroom or garage if you leave the door open. Keep it away from the cat’s eating area, they don’t like toileting near their food & water.

Purrfecting the HERDD tray

Here are our HERDD HQ tips for using HERDD pet litter for a cat:

We use a simple tray {like above}, & 1 bag of HERDD pet litter lasts approx. 8 weeks for one cat. With two, we go through a bag in about 5 weeks.

1. Fill the clean tray to a depth of ~2cm (or less). Maximum 3cm if you like it deeper.

2. On the daily {twice a day ideally}:

First deal to the No. 2's: Everyday, pick off the 💩 & flush. Using a paper towel or loo paper is an easy way to just collect solid-formed droppings, & not the litter with it. If the No. 2’s are soft/runny & you collect litter with it when removing, bin it or dig it into the garden. Nothing other than Toilet Paper should go in to the sewage system—it has enough to deal with.

Next, the No. 1's: Everyday, grab the wettest patch from the middle of urine spots & dispose (i.e. garden). These will be clearly visible in the HERDD litter, puffed up darker areas. Use a scoop or repurpose a bread bag {or similar} to lift out the damp section, removing minimal unsoiled litter. The remaining bits will fall to the bottom through the pellets & dry out. If you find your cat is doing big wee’s, sprinkle a small amount of HERDD from the bag onto the wet area, & it’ll soak it up.

3. Each week:

For ultimate hygiene: Once a week, when the litter in the tray has run down to about half from what you’ve taken out, tip the entire contents into the garden or bin. Wash the tray with dish liquid & hot water, & dry.

🔁 Start at #1 above, & repeat in weekly cycles
